Vers la fin du xix e siècle, l’étude du local, alors appelée « folk-lore », a été définie comme une « science du peuple français » qui permet la fabrication d’une nouvelle facette de l’identité nationale française. Les articles d’Henri Collet, de Mathilde Daubresse, de Marguerite Béclard d’Harcourt et de Luc Marvy donnent un aperçu de la place qu’occupait le folklore dans la presse musicale française de 1912 à 1935. Ils illustrent les différentes façons par lesquelles les musicographes français·e·s ont abordé le folklore après la course à la cueillette des chansons régionales. Loin de présenter un front commun sur son importance, certain·e·s souscrivent à l’idée ruraliste voulant que le folklore soit une musique authentique qui doit être sauvée alors que d’autres voient en lui un potentiel outil autant pour la création musicale que pour la définition d’un certain nationalisme.
