Abstract
Pensionnaire à la villa Médicis à Rome entre 1901 et 1904, Florent Schmitt découvre le poème d’Edgar Poe, « Le Palais hanté », qui lui inspire une Étude symphonique d’après des sensations diverses (1904) rebaptisée peu après Étude symphonique pour le Palais hanté puis Étude pour le Palais hanté d’Edgar Poe. Si elle apparait dès le deuxième titre, l’association de l’oeuvre avec celle de l’écrivain américain n’en reste pas moins distancée, comme en témoigne l’« avertissement » que Schmitt écrit en 1905 : sa musique « ne s’attache pas à suivre littéralement le poème », mais veut rendre « comme une impression de la vision fantastique et imprécise que suscite la traduction de [Stéphane] Mallarmé ». Cet article propose de retracer la genèse de cette oeuvre puissamment suggestive et de mettre en évidence les points saillants de sa composition et de sa réception, en lien avec le poème qui l’a inspirée.
