En 1596, le premier miracle de la Madonna della Ghiara fut enregistré à Reggio Emilia. Le culte de l’effigie se répandit rapidement en Italie du Nord, engendrant la création d’un grand nombre de gravures. Le transfert médial de la fresque à la gravure témoigne du culte de l’icône et de sa valeur, qui fut plutôt modifiée lors de la création ultérieure d’une copie peinte dans la région de Rome. Remplaçant le retable dans la chapelle de la villa d’Este à Tivoli, dont le décor fut créé 30 ans avant son inclusion, la copie de la Madone s’y intègre pourtant judicieusement. Le transfert de l’icône dans ce nouvel environnement suggère qu’elle était envisagée, par le cardinal propriétaire des lieux, pour participer au discours de la chapelle sur le rôle de la Vierge dans le Salut des hommes. En plus d’apporter de nouveaux éclairages sur la dévotion domestique dans l’Italie de la Contre-Réforme, cette étude de cas montre comment l’agentivité des images était déterminée par les médias, les contextes et les lieux de réception au début de l’ère moderne.
