Abstract
Cet article cherche à comprendre pourquoi la poutine est devenue un nouveau plat identitaire au Québec. Pour ce faire, il analyse le récit des origines de ce plat tel qu’il se déploie dans diverses productions documentaires et fictionnelles contemporaines. Il postule que ce récit permet de recadrer et de positiver certaines dimensions perçues comme problématiques de l’identité québécoise. L’article examine d’abord l’espace-temps utopique du récit des origines, soit le Québec rural des années 50. Il se tourne ensuite vers les personnages colorés qu’il met en jeu, qui composent une figure archétypale de l’inventeur de la poutine où se côtoient le petit entrepreneur, le voyageur, le bricoleur et l’oncle complice. Enfin une facette spécifique de ce personnage est mise en évidence : marginal, porteur de rupture, mais sur un mode marqué par l’humour, il apparaît comme un véritable trickster. Cette dominante humoristique du récit des origines est abordée en conclusion.
