Les sources conservées aux Archives nationales d’outre-mer offrent de nombreuses pistes de recherche pour étudier l’histoire de la statistique dans le contexte colonial français. L’étude des sources, tant de leur contenu que de l’historique de leur constitution, permet de dégager les traits saillants de l’utilisation et de la valeur accordée à la pratique statistique par l’administration coloniale dans les territoires colonisés par la France. Outil de gouvernance, de propagande, de surveillance ou encore de conception de politiques publiques, la statistique se déploie à travers une large gamme d’applications selon l’époque et les territoires considérés, interrogeant finalement sur les spécificités qu’elle revêt en contexte colonial.
