Abstract
Introdução: A icterícia neonatal é uma condição clínica associada a neonatos, é caracterizada pela elevação de níveis séricos de bilirrubina indireta, gerando um acúmulo de pigmento amarelado na pele e mucosas, é uma condição frequentemente benigna, contudo se não for devidamente monitorada e tratada poderá desenvolver uma condição de toxicidade no sistema nervoso central, o kernicterus, descrito como um dano neurológico decorrente da alta concentração de bilirrubina não conjugada através da barreira hematoencefálica. Objetivo: Elaborar uma revisão de literatura, buscando compreender acerca da hiperbilirrubinemia na icterícia neonatal, e sua manifestação aguda, a encefalopatia bilirrubínica, kernicterus. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura, retrospectiva com dados obtidos através de plataformas como Google Scholar, PUBMED, BVS (Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde) e SciElo (Scientific Eletronic Library Online). Referencial: Foi abordado acerca da origem e síntese da bilirrubina destrinchando o processo a fim de elucidar como se obtém a condição de hiperbilirrubinemia e os fatores que influenciam no aumento da bilirrubina na icterícia neonatal bem como seu diagnóstico e tratamento adequado a fim de evitar a lesão neurológica da bilirrubina, o Kernicterus Spectrum Disorders (KSDs). Considerações finais: A revisão destaca como a monitoração, tratamento adequado e análise correta dos aspectos fisiológicos e patológicos podem prevenir a evolução da icterícia neonatal em encefalopatia aguda por bilirrubina e kernicterus.
