Abstract
Pour saisir pleinement le travail de la photographe féministe britannique Jo Spence, il est indispensable de comprendre l’archive constituée après sa mort sous son actuelle forme dispersée. Dans cette perspective, cet article explore trois facettes du travail de Jo Spence. Nous décrirons tout d’abord la dimension radicale de sa pratique, marquée notamment par son appropriation du mouvement photographique ouvrier des années 1920 et 1930 dans une volonté de situer son travail à l’intersection de l’activisme et de l’art. Cet article examinera ensuite les années 1970 et 1980, sa période la plus féconde, puis finalement la gestion des archives constituées après sa mort en 1992. En retraçant les échos suscités par son œuvre engagée, cet article évalue enfin l’importance de la centaine de photocopies couleur, tirages numériques et fichiers informatiques désormais abrités au sein de la collection du Ryerson Image Centre de la Ryerson University de Toronto, au Canada, à l’aune de la dimension polémique du travail de Jo Spence.
