Abstract
En 1982, le Vietnam Veterans Memorial est inauguré à Washington, D.C. Renonçant aux codes traditionnels du monument commémoratif, notamment la figuration, il donne lieu à une vive controverse, tout en s’imposant comme nouveau paradigme de la commémoration de la mort de masse. C’est dans ce contexte que des vétérans de la guerre de Corée discutent des modalités de la commémoration de leur « guerre oubliée » dans la capitale fédérale et parviennent à la réalisation d’un monument qui remet la figuration au centre : plus de 2 400 photographies y sont gravées sur du granit. Plusieurs monuments consacrés à la Corée reposent sur la remédiation de photographies d’actualité. À partir de trois d’entre eux, cet article interroge ce qui motive le recours au document photographique pour commémorer la guerre. L’appropriation, la monumentalisation et la resémantisation des documents photographiques apparaît alors comme une stratégie de rehéroïsation du monument aux morts, offrant aux vétérans une solution satisfaisante à la difficile commémoration d’une guerre sans victoire.
