Abstract
As a cub, “Buddy” was captured by an RCMP officer stationed in Igluligaarjuk (Chesterfield Inlet), Nunavut, and treated as a pet. In 1922, the small polar bear was sent to Montreal on the Nascopie supply ship before travelling by train to Banff, Alberta. Buddy resided in the Banff Park Zoo until 1937 when the zoo closed due to charges of animal cruelty, and in 1938, he was transferred to the zoo in Calgary. This chapter analyses photographs, film, and written narratives to convey the affordances and limitations of Buddy’s daily life, insisting that he was a sentient bear who actively lived and laboured in Banff.
