La suite de romans de Monénembo constituée de Peuls (2004), Le roi de Kahel (2008), Le terroriste noir (2012), peut être lue comme la volonté de l’auteur de rappeler la place de sa communauté (les Peuls de l’Afrique de l’Ouest) dans l’histoire mondiale. Le premier roman constitue le socle qui explique les fondements de la culture peule ; le deuxième propose, au-delà des récits mythiques ou populaires, une reconstruction des faits historiques relatifs à la conquête du Fouta Djalon, le terroir peul de la Guinée natale de l’auteur ; le troisième réhabilite un personnage peul oublié de l’histoire coloniale et de la littérature scientifique, Addi Bâ, figure de la Résistance française. De l’un à l’autre, s’affirme une circularité de ce qui fait l’homo fulanus. Thématiquement liés, ils racontent les événements historiques marquants et les aventures d’un peuple qui a traversé le temps et son lot de violences. Ils sont saga, affirmation d’une identité collective et témoignage d’une « capacité de résilience africaine ». Cet article propose donc, dans une perspective transdisciplinaire, une lecture monographique du roman historique chez Monénembo.
