Abstract
Les romans de Monénembo questionnent la mémoire et l’histoire tout en revendiquant leur caractère fictionnel et artistique. Chacun existe grâce à une proposition formelle qui récuse les identités figées et ne se résume pas au statut de discours d’escorte du réel. Le narrateur et la scène énonciative des fictions s’opposent à une réception qui définit la légitimité de la parole en fonction de l’origine de l’auteur. La création artistique agit sur son destinataire ; elle porte des enjeux politiques et historiques ; elle offre d’abord une expressivité dans la langue qui est un espace de liberté, où se construit le sens. Au coeur de l’oeuvre de Monénembo, cette force n’est jamais un miroir du réel mais ce qui « rend visible » (Paul Klee). Nous montrons comment cette oeuvre, par son originalité et sa diversité, participe à l’élaboration de l’« universel latéral » que Souleymane Bachir Diagne pose comme modalité indispensable du renouvellement du lien entre les cultures, les êtres et le passé : la fiction convoque, sans obligation référentielle, les ressemblances et les proximités, plutôt que les impossibilités à faire communauté.
