Abstract
As one of Canada’s three recognised groups of Indigenous peoples, the Métis recognise homelands which encompass much of the landscape between Ontario and the Rocky Mountains. Conventionally, historical and archaeological accounts of Métis relationships with this landscape are often framed in terms of the Métis traditional professions as hunters, trappers, and freighters. While these professions require an intimate relationship with the landscape, this emphasis has been inherently androcentric in nature, thereby diminishing the relationships between Métis women and the landscape and between genders within Métis kinship networks. In this chapter, we seek to reframe Métis relationships with the landscape by highlighting the role of women in the Métis application of geographic and kinship-based mobility in a kinscape represented through a web of interconnected relations. Using the Chimney Coulee site in south-western Saskatchewan as a case study, we also incorporate Métis ways of knowing, such as keeoukaywin (the visiting way) and wâhkôhtowin (the state of being related), into our interpretation of this site. By incorporating these Métis-specific Indigenous perspectives in our work with Métis material culture, we demonstrate how understanding Métis women’s relationships with the landscape and with others in their community can result in a more dynamic representation of the past.
