Abstract

In this teaching practice article, we analyze and describe a transdisciplinary model for the integration of communication instruction into a first-year design course. We find that while the model is successful in allowing the teaching team to share both transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary frameworks for instruction and learning objectives, there remains a role for interdisciplinary work that maintains the boundaries between disciplines. Moreover, we identify challenges posed by the pedagogical complexity of the course and instructional roles, job precarity and the uncertainty of labour conditions. We finally argue that although our model works in practice, the advantages and disadvantages of our model are subject to constant evolution and development.
