L’alimentation est au cœur de la vie de famille. Il s’agit bien sûr d’une nécessité biologique dont dépendent la survie et le bien-être, mais le portrait est en fait beaucoup plus large… Les choix alimentaires sont-ils seulement guidés par des caprices et des préférences individuelles? Bien souvent, l’alimentation n’est pas étrangère à l’identité culturelle, communautaire et familiale. Et parfois, ces choix nous sont en quelque sorte imposés en fonction de l’accessibilité et de la disponibilité des aliments. Peu importe la situation, les familles parviennent à s’adapter et à réagir pour répondre aux besoins nutritionnels de chacun. Certaines familles ont souvent l’occasion de manger ensemble, et les repas familiaux sont alors l’occasion de « moduler » ces relations familiales en procurant un cadre favorable à l’expression des dynamiques internes, qu’il s’agisse de déléguer les responsabilités pour faire la cuisine, de discuter des prochaines vacances ou de négocier la corvée de vaisselle… D’autres familles sont plutôt contraintes de manger « sur le pouce », parfois en raison d’horaires chargés ou à cause des impératifs de la mobilité pour le travail.
