Abstract

Laboratory (lab) components are an integral component of many engineering courses (40% of core courses in one field, 10-55% of the course grade). Thus, careful lab design that incorporates best pedagogical practices, universal design, and equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) is critical. Best practice(s) for (re)designing the lab component of a course from a teaching and learning pedagogy, universal design, and EDI perspective were compiled based on literature review. A scoping review method led to a recursively growing set of critical literatures covering a broad range of engineering lab experiences. These experiences were evaluated to determine capabilities, limitations, and considerations of various lab options. The options include on campus, distance, hands-on, remote, and virtual lab activities. This work synthesizes the literature into a usable lab design guide for instructors who may not have training in, or time to learn, all relevant aspects of lab design for diverse learners.
