Abstract Let F be a field of characteristic 2. We obtain upper bounds on the symbol length of classes in $$H_2^3(F)$$ H 2 3 ( F ) of forms in $$I_q^3 F$$ I q 3 F of any prescribed (even) dimension. We also discuss the 3-Pfister number of forms in $$I^3_qF$$ I q 3 F of dimension $$\leqslant 14$$ ⩽ 14 .
