The photocuring of 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)ethyltrimethoxysilane-based ladder-like polysilsesquioxane (L) with poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) side chains results in an exceptionally hard, highly wear-resistant anti-smudge coating. In this study, we developed bi-functional L coatings with both anti-smudge and antimicrobial properties. The process begins with the synthesis of graft copolymers , P(A-1k) or P(A-5k), through free radical copolymerization of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (A) and methacrylate-terminated PDMS of either 1.0 kDa (1k) or 5.0 kDa (5k), using 4,4-azobis(4-cyanovaleric acid) as the initiator. Due to chain termination by disproportionation , the resulting P(A-1k) and P(A-5k) primarily contain one terminal carboxyl group per chain. These terminal groups react with excess L through epoxide ring opening, producing L-P(A-1k) and L-P(A-5k), which consist mainly of L and small amounts of double graft ( g ) copolymers , L- g -P(A-1k) and L- g -P(A-5k), respectively (for a more thorough clarification of the notations see List of Polymer Abbreviations at the end of the paper). Casting a solution of L-P(A-1k) or L-P(A-5k) with a cationic photoinitiator and additional L (to fine-tune the coating composition) forms films enriched with P(A-1k) or P(A-5k) on the surface due to the low surface energies of 1k or 5k. After curing these films via UV irradiation and heating, the surface A groups are converted to quaternary ammonium salts through treatment with methyl iodide or propyl iodide. The resulting coatings exhibit anti-smudge properties in air, attributed to the exposed 1k or 5k chains. When in contact with water droplets containing E. coli , the surfaces undergo reconstruction, exposing the quaternary ammonium salts , which effectively kill the bacteria. This study investigates the factors affecting the formation of the coatings, their smudge repellency , surface reconstruction, and antimicrobial efficacy .
