Abstract
L’Américain Harry Whittier Frees (1879-1953) est connu pour ses clichés mettant en scène de jeunes animaux costumés. Chatons, chiots, lapereaux, porcelets sont photographiés grimés dans des saynètes drolatiques de la quotidienneté humaine (tâches ménagères, activités d’étude, de divertissement et de socialisation, etc.). Frees a publié ses images sous la forme de cartes postales, mais également dans des ouvrages pédagogiques destinés aux enfants (Kittens and Cats, 1911; The Little Folks of Animal Land, 1915; Animal Land on the Air, 1929; Four Little Kittens, 1934). Ces représentations s’inscrivent certes dans une longue tradition illustrative misant sur l’anthropomorphisation du monde animal à des fins didactiques et morales. Elles soulèvent toutefois des enjeux éthiques et éthologiques spécifiques à la photographie d’animaux vivants. De cela, Frees avait pleinement conscience. C’est pourquoi il publiait dans les pages liminaires de ses livres des avis assurant parents et enseignants de sa bienveillance envers les animaux. C’est à l’étude de ces « avertissements » à l’attention des adultes que cet article est consacré.
