To achieve global sustainable development goals, implementing renewables and increasing electrification in different sectors, especially heating and cooling, should be paramount. This study examines the switch from conventional fossil fuel-powered HVAC systems to electric ones, highlighting the importance of this shift for deep decarbonization, lowering air pollution, and promoting sustainable urban growth. When physical pilots face difficulties, computer-aided energy system modelling becomes essential, requiring skilled models sensitive to the user’s needs. The article suggests an automated procedure as part of the Tools4Cities platform for retrofitting city HVAC systems to fill in the gaps. The process uses a generic data model for standardized energy system simulation, and it was tested in Montréal. Simulation results demonstrate the potential for cost and emission reduction through electrification, showcasing the importance of improving grid infrastructure for widespread adoption.
