Abstract
L’auteur Nikos Kachtitsis est un représentant intéressant de l’émigration grecque d’après la seconde guerre mondiale, par les aspects multiples, bien documentés dans sa correspondance, de sa motivation pour partir à Montréal. La réalité ne tarde pas à rattraper Kachtitsis, qui constate bien vite que la vie n’est pas rose au Canada. Après dix ans il rêve de Londres et de Paris, oubliant qu’auparavant il avait hurlé sa haine des Français et qu’il avait trouvé l’architecture de Londres lugubre. Ce n’est donc pas étonnant qu’il arrive à la conclusion qu’il n’est plus chez lui ni en Grèce ni à l’étranger, et qu’il vaut mieux rester là où on est, comme l’ont fait ses amis, pour que les rêves puissent rester intacts. La vraie patrie pour Kachtitsis, ce sont les rêves, avec les souvenirs et surtout les amis qui les partagent. Ils forment ce quelque chose qui nous dévorera toujours l’âme, malgré toutes les déconvenues. Le trouver, c’est pour Kachtitsis la tâche de la littérature.
