Love conquers all? An exploration of guidance books for parents, family and friends of lesbians and gay men

Abstract
Books offering guidance and support to parents, family and friends of lesbians and gay men 1 have been published since the late 1970s. The books present a person ‘coming out’ as lesbian or gay as a central defining event for family relationships and friendships. In this paper, we provide a feminist discursive analysis of a sample of these texts – focusing on how they construct homosexuality and the resources and tools they offer for making sense of having a lesbian or gay child, family member or friend. We argue that although the books are an important source of information and support for parents, family and friends of lesbians and gay men, they are limited by a strong emphasis on liberal-humanistic discourses and the neglect of more radical social/political discourses. The books offer a rather rigid framework for making sense of a child’s, family member’s or friend’s homosexuality, disavowing the complexity of emotional reactions to a new (intimate) acquaintance with homosexuality.
