There are 6.3 million pregnancies annually in the United States, and almost half of them are unplanned. Approximately 50% of the women who become pregnant unintentionally are using some form of contraception at the time of conception. In the United States, unintended pregnancy, especially among women under age 25, is more of a problem than in other Western nations, with teen pregnancy rates in five northern European countries and Canada ranging from 5-53% of the U.S. rate. This is thought to be due, at least in part, to the fact that adolescent women in the U.S. are less likely than their European counterparts to use contraception of any kind; most specifically, hormonal contraceptives.
