Abstract
This article presents how a chain of oversights by multiple parties resulted in the collapse of a steel-framed farm building while under construction. The steel members of the subject building were taken from a dismantled steel-framed industrial building built in 1975 in Ottawa, Ontario. Signs of severe corrosion were present in the steel members. The steel members were to be installed in another city (subject City) in Ontario. The owner obtained the original drawings from the City of Ottawa, retained an engineer to design the foundation, and applied for a building permit. The building department of the subject City requested more information on the drawings; however, they eventually issued a building permit for the project without receiving the requested information. The contractor began erecting the steel structure without any detailed drawings, and without installing temporary diagonal bracing, neither of which was noticed by the city inspector. The subject building collapsed in June of 2023.
