Abstract
As a proto-queer woman in an east-coast fishing town raised by a single mother late last century, it was radically unsafe for Prof. Meisner to come out or to explore her nascent fluid gender identity. Homosexuality, while then no longer criminalized, was still pathologized, stigmatized and an open invitation to violence. Her liberating moment, her way forward, came when Dr. Meisner began to work in theatre and spoken word. This experience, admittedly urban back then, showed her that many notions of identity, gender included, could be performed, resisted, played with and rehearsed. Fittingly, theatre, performance, radical play, rehearsal and liveness are also central to her Creative Writing teaching, primarily in Calgary, Alberta, the financial centre of Canada’s male-centric, environmentally degrading tar-sands industry. For one test case, this chapter includes discussion of Legislating Love: The Everett Klippert Story , Prof. Meisner’s well-received play about the last Canadian man to be jailed for homosexuality. This historical drama was greatly empowered by Prof. Meisner’s rare access to Mr. Klippert’s papers (a karmic gift from his family).
