Abstract
This chapter confronts years of campus gender politics towards the often feminized discipline of Creative Writing, despite, and even in, the first 13 years (2011–2024) directing one of the newer CW master’s degrees in Canada, the MFA in Writing at the University of Saskatchewan. Through a gendered lens, Professor Lynes tracks the graduate writing program through its initial interdisciplinary institutional home to a more recent home in a department of English. This chapter recounts disciplinary turf wars and their exacerbation by both institutionalized gender expectations and its application to CW as a discipline. Pedagogically, this chapter also addresses the challenges, and few rewards, of how CW program leadership impacts the program leader’s teaching and mentoring. In a broader sense, this chapter resonates with the movement of Creative Writing curricula, at the university level, from margin to somewhere closer to centre.
