Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a novel unit cell designed for RIS technology. This 1-bit unit cell, controlled by a single switch, exhibits wideband characteristics in the Ka band frequency range. It facilitates monolithic integration with electric field-induced VO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> switches and allows for individual access to these switches from the board’s edges via a specialized DC biasing circuit. This circuit maintains the uniformity of the unit cells in an array configuration and removes the necessity for vias. Fabricated on a single substrate using a microfabrication technique, the unit cell was evaluated in a waveguide setup. The reflection phase and magnitude outcomes are consistent with numerical simulations, verifying a bandwidth exceeding 16% at around 32.6 GHz in the test environment. Additionally, in a distinct fabrication process, the VO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> switches were combined with the proposed biasing circuits, and their functionality was verified through a DC test.
