Abstract

Circulating growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) increases during exercise, but the physiological role that it plays has not been elucidated. Recent data suggest that GDF15 regulates corticosterone and lipid utilization. Here we demonstrate that postexercise nutrient availability influences GDF15 in the recovery from exercise and GDF15 is associated with corticosterone and indices of lipid utilization. However, the associations were not causal as exercise-induced increases in fatty acids, beta-hydroxybutyrate, and corticosterone were intact in GDF15 −/− mice.
