Fairness and Responsibility in Couples' Financial Discussions

Abstract
This study investigates the role of financial conflict in romantic relationships. Participants (N = 221) first reported on their financial disagreements with their partners and rated a number of relationship attributes. Two days later, they were randomly assigned to recall either fair or responsible financial behaviour from their partner and rate the same relationship attributes again. Both recall tasks were successful at improving perceived financial communication and perceived partner spending but not financial worry or financial satisfaction. In sum, findings showed recalling any positive financial act can benefit the relationship regardless of which financial topics people fight about. The task was no more effective at improving relationship and financial outcomes when the condition matched the pre-existing conflict’s theme. Implications for relationship therapists as well as financial counsellors will be discussed.
