Abstract
Dans cet essai, nous voyons comment l’expérience des ruines et l’imaginaire des prisons conduisent le graveur/architecte Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) à explorer plusieurs registres de temporalité, à s’engager dans une recherche d’origine, une exploration de la mémoire et une méditation sur la mort. Les mausolées étrusques, les columbariums romains sont des métaphores pour parler de nos édifices conceptuels et des bas-fonds de la psyché. L’eau-forte interroge l’ordre symbolique d’une époque quand ce médium devient l’analogon de celle-ci, le dispositif d’inscription dans lequel se donne une épaisseur du monde. Par des exercices de perdition et de sublimation, de discontinuité et de répétition, l’artiste trouve en lui-même le principe de sa continuité.
