Abstract
Los Estados Unidos de América experimentaron un profundo examen de conciencia en 2020. La conmoción provocada por la pandemia del Covid, sumada a las perturbaciones económicas y sociales, así como el asesinato de George Floyd a manos de la policía, forzaron una reflexión acerca de la violencia racial, racista y estatal. Ese mismo año, Opal Tometi, cofundadora de Black Lives Matter, escribía que cree que «lo que estamos presenciando ahora es la apertura de las imaginaciones, donde la gente está empezando a pensar de forma más amplia sobre cuáles podrían ser las soluciones»[mfn]Isaac Chotiner, «A Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Explains Why This Time Is Different». En la facultad de diseño y artes audiovisuales de la UCLA, imparto una asignatura titulada Design Futures (Futuros del diseño), que históricamente ha sido una incubadora de investigación y producción híbridas. Como respuesta a los problemas actuales, buscamos investigar cómo la teoría y la praxis del diseño podrían abrir una serie de nuevos futuros más inclusivos. La pregunta que se nos planteó fue: ¿qué puede hacer el diseño para ayudarnos en este momento? ¿Cómo podríamos concebir o diseñar futuros en los que realmente queramos vivir, que no sean instrumentalizados por intereses comerciales? Hemos encontrado una respuesta a una serie de provocaciones planteadas en el marco de la investigación en diseño, que hemos denominado Soluciones para (x)Futurismos (Solve for (x)Futurisms). El espectro abarca desde los Futurismos Afro a los Futurismos Latinx, pasando por los Futurismos Indígenas y los Futurismos Queer. El grupo investigó las prácticas existentes, configuró etnografías de diseño y, posteriormente, simuló sus propios escenarios futuros a medida.
