Abstract
Abstract Chapter 3 explains the influence of international law on the development and scope of privacy law in England and Wales and examines the scope of privacy protections in other jurisdictions. Following an introduction in Section A, Section B identifies the United Kingdom’s international privacy obligations in the United Nations, the European Union, the Council of Europe, and the European Convention on Human Rights (‘ECHR’). This section provides a detailed examination of the scope of privacy protection afforded by Article 8 ECHR. Section C provides an overview of privacy protection in other common law and mixed jurisdictions, namely, the United States, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. The concluding section, Section D, considers the civil law privacy protections in Scotland, Germany, and France.
