Abstract

C–H bond activation reactions have emerged as powerful tools in organic synthesis, enabling the direct functionalization of inert C–H bonds under mild conditions, minimizing or eliminating the need for pre-functionalization of substrates. Typically, these reactions have been conducted in organic solvents, but the increasingly growing emphasis toward sustainable practices has prompted researchers to explore water as a reaction medium. This shift not only aligns with environmental concerns but also presents unique challenges and opportunities in terms of reactivity and selectivity. Consequently, an increasing number of C–H-activation-based chemical transformations have been successfully developed in aqueous environments, offering significant advantages in terms of sustainability, safety, and biocompatibility. Overall, this chapter serves to provide a comprehensive overview and elucidation of the rapid progress in aqueous phase C–H bond activation, inspiring further research endeavors in this exciting field and thereby boosting efficient and sustainable development from the perspectives of synthetic efficiency and minimizing environmental impact.
