Dans l’histoire des milieux étudiants, la période précédant les années 1960 a longtemps servi de repoussoir commode aux grands combats des sixties et des décennies ultérieures. À la façon de la « grande noirceur », le mythe d’un milieu étudiant pétri d’obscurantisme, de folklore et de légèreté s’est imposé dès le début de la Révolution tranquille. Malgré quelques recherches pionnières qui ont battu en brèche ce mythe et suggéré des jalons pour complexifier l’histoire étudiante avant 1960, un travail plus fin de périodisation est nécessaire afin de différencier les milieux étudiants qui ont marqué l’histoire du Québec de la fin du XIXe siècle à la Révolution tranquille. Nous entendons dans cet article contribuer à ce chantier en analysant une période en particulier, celle de 1945 à 1951, que nous identifions comme une première révolution tranquille estudiantine. Elle est en effet caractérisée par une rupture avec le milieu étudiant précédent et par une volonté réformiste, une mobilisation organisationnelle, une revendication d’autonomie et une confiance dans l’Histoire inédites jusque-là dans le milieu étudiant. Afin d’éprouver cette hypothèse, nous privilégions le parcours de l’un des acteurs clés de cette révolution à l’Université de Montréal, l’étudiant Camille Laurin, dont les initiatives dans le journal Quartier latin et dans la vie associative permettent de brosser un portrait des transformations qui animent alors plus largement le milieu étudiant.
