Abstract
This chapter examines key themes, contexts, and developments in Black Canadian theatre and drama from the nineteenth century to the present. With an emphasis on the cultural resurgence of the 1990s and 2000s that led to the creation of a Black Canadian dramatic canon, this chapter traces the multiple generations of theater artists who worked to create a more inclusive theatrical landscape in Canada while also commenting on important trends in Black Canadian playwriting. Drawing on theories of the dialogic exchange between national and diasporic themes, contexts, and intertexts in Black Canadian writing by George Elliot Clarke and Rinaldo Walcott, this study analyzes plays that counter the erasure and marginalization of Blackness by adapting and hybridizing historical and literary narratives to represent multiple, diverse, and intersectional Black Canadian identities.
