Abstract
This chapter focuses on Nalo Hopkinson’s political and philosophical engagement with the speculative. Exploiting speculative fiction’s capacity for immanent critique, Hopkinson engages subversively with the ideological fantasies that structure sociopolitical practices in the Americas. Across a range of forms, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, and magical realism, Hopkinson queries everyday practices and modes of thought that shore up structures of oppression so as to open up space for a Black, feminist, queer, and decolonial counter-poetics. Vital to this project is the way Hopkinson’s oeuvre locates Canada in the broader Atlantic world, against the discourse of Canadian exceptionalism. This chapter traces the key thematic concerns and formal experiments in Hopkinson’s fiction and graphica while also attending to her important work as editor of anthologies and her political interventions in what André Carrington characterizes as “vernacular intellectual spaces.”
