Abstract
This chapter offers a comprehensive exploration of Black literature on the Canadian prairies spanning 151 years, from 1872 to 2023. It illuminates a rich Black prairie literary tradition, thus challenging the prevalent omission of Black presences and cultural production in dominant histories and literary assessments of the region. By providing an overview of the Black history of the prairies going back to 1780, this chapter contextualizes the literature within its historical frame and examines the diverse range of Black experiences, from early fur traders and voyageurs of the eighteenth century, to the cooks, cowboys, and laborers of the nineteenth century, as well as the multiple migrations of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Beyond a mere survey, this chapter critically engages with the formal and generic complexities of the literature, encompassing letters, oral traditions, memoir, newspaper editorials, political speeches, poetry, novels, drama, sports writing, micro-fiction, and rap.
