Austin Clarke's “Out-a-Order”1 Poetics and the Archiving of Black Lives

Abstract
Austin Clarke’s robust contribution to curating Black lives, creating opportunities for arts workers, and challenging systemic racism has had extensive resonance in Canada, the Caribbean, the United States of America, and the wider African diaspora. Considered through a disorderly poetics and an archival practice, this chapter argues that Clarke’s formidable creative and political work is an imaginative response to an anti-Black ethos and a commitment to excavating and delineating the struggles and survival strategies of Black people. Indeed, over 50 years of literary productivity, Clarke consolidated a huge artistic archive of Black subjects. Coming of age as a young writer in Toronto in the late 1950s/early 1960s and experiencing racism himself, he, unsurprisingly, saw the importance of political activism around race issues and was never shy to lend his voice to the cause. Yet, his rise to literary stardom was not smooth or distinguished by linear progression.
