Abstract
This modest inquiry into Black Toronto literature draws on and extends my earlier work to offer a perspective on the city writing of Austin Clarke and Dionne Brand whose work takes up the city of Toronto in sustained, substantive, and reiterative ways across time, space, and literary genres. This chapter then turns briefly to the novels of David Chariandy whose urban literary aesthetic recuperates and expands on the urgent sociopolitical concerns Clarke and Brand probe in their writing before providing a necessarily cursory glimpse into the work of newer and emerging Black Toronto-focused writers whose work suggests that the interest in querying the issues the first wave of Black city writers engaged with has not waned. Indeed, Black Toronto literature published in the last few decades points to an ongoing interest in and commitment to depicting the complexities and contradictions of a city whose profound disregard for the lived experience of Black residents gives the lie to its tight embrace of multiculturalism.
