Abstract
This chapter traces the history of dramatic feature films by Black filmmakers in Canada over the last 30 years. This chapter considers the systemic obstacles created by a white-dominated feature film industry that, in Canada, has historically supported documentary filmmaking over drama, and that has not always been receptive to Black voices, narratives, or modes of storytelling. It also recounts a history of activism and resistance by Black filmmakers, most notably through the Black Film and Video Network, to create literal and discursive spaces that allowed their cinematic work to be produced, exhibited, and distributed. This chapter also highlights some of the most important moments, directors, and films in this body of work since the first two films in Canada by Black directors were released in 1995. Since then, a small, but rich body of work has emerged, and this chapter aims to account for both its aesthetic and creative range and also the sociopolitical conditions in which it is created and circulated.
