Lope de Vegas Stück El villano en su rincón, das um 1611 entstand, hat aufgrund seiner komplexen Erzählung über die Begegnung des wohlhabenden Bauern Juan Labrador mit seinem König große Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Die ursprünglich von Antonio de Torquemadas Coloquios satíricos inspirierte Handlung wird von Vega neu strukturiert, um das autonome Landleben dem Einfluss der höfischen Existenz gegenüberzustellen. Im Mittelpunkt des Stücks steht das Thema des Respekts des Untertanen vor dem Herrscher und die Konfrontation zwischen ländlicher und höfischer Lebensweise, die Juans Familie erlebt. Das Stück hinterfragt die Lebensfähigkeit des stoischen, selbstgenügsamen ländlichen Ideals inmitten des aufkommenden Absolutismus und geht der Frage nach, ob Juans Verwandlung vom Dorfbewohner zum höfischen Verwalter eine Strafe oder eine Belohnung bedeutet. Diese Dualität, die der Struktur des Dramas inhärent ist, veranschaulicht den Wandel der frühmodernen Gesellschaftsmodelle. Vega nutzt die Vielstimmigkeit des Theaters, um unterschiedliche Auffassungen von gesellschaftlichen Rollen und persönlicher Entfaltung darzustellen, die letztlich das sich entwickelnde politische Selbstverständnis der frühneuzeitlichen Gesellschaft widerspiegeln.
