Abstract
Many of the liquids encountered in environmental engineering practice are sediment-laden. Examples are raw sewage, chemical slurries used in water and wastewater treatment, activated sludge, and other water and wastewater sludges. This chapter focuses on the transport of sediments in water and wastewater engineering applications. Although water-induced circulation is less commonly employed, it can be economically advantageous and, in some cases, even essential to proper channel agitation. Aside from aeration tanks, sludge holding tanks, and similarly sized tanks, many of the actual or contemplated applications of air-induced circulation are for channels which are considerably shallower and/or narrower than those for which test data are available. One interesting practical application in environmental engineering was the use of such an additive to temporarily increase the capacity of the sewer network of Whistler, Canada, during the high population increase at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
