Abstract
Bertolt Brecht et Kurt Weill n’ont pas seulement renouvelé la forme spectaculaire : ils ont tenté de tester au sens propre du terme la pertinence de modèles sociaux, de stigmatiser les aberrations des rapports humains dans ce qu’ils ont de plus sensible : leurs utopies. L’opéra Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny est à ce titre particulièrement emblématique. Plusieurs systèmes d’organisation sociale sont passés au crible : libéralisme, totalitarisme, anarchie, qui définissent à chaque fois de nouveaux rapports entre la masse et l’individu, entre le système social et la liberté individuelle. Ces problématiques sont développées à travers trois regards : celui du dramaturge, qui fait participer la conscience collective du spectateur à ces mécanismes sociaux, celui du musicien, à qui incombe la charge de rendre sensible la fluidité et la mouvance constante de ces rapports, et enfin celui d’un metteur en scène, Joachim Herz. En 1976 à l’Opéra Comique de Berlin-Est, il réalise une production qui renvoie les problématiques présentes sur scène dans la salle. L’orientation des composantes scéniques amène peu à peu le spectateur anonyme à être confronté à sa propre histoire, et à prendre position.
