Abstract
Abstract: An analysis of the role of Achilles in late antique Latin poetry illustrates that he is viewed both as a positive role model and as a negative exemplum or an inferior foil. Both the positive and unfavorable aspects of Achilles’ characterization are linked to the aspirations of the Roman elite and the values emphasized by both pagan and Christian Latin poets. L’analyse du rôle d’Achille dans la poésie latine de l’Antiquité tardive montre qu’il est vu à la fois comme un modèle positif et un exemplum négatif ou repoussoir inférieur. Les aspects favorables comme défavorables de la caractérisation d’Achille sont liés aux aspirations de l’élite romaine et aux valeurs mises en avant par les poètes latins, tant païens que chrétiens.
