Abstract
Organic production activities in Canada and the United States (US) continue to grow under the framework of organic management. Both countries have established laws, standards, certification programs and labeling requirements for organic production. In the US, the National Organic Program, under the direction of the Agricultural Marketing Service, which is part of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), regulates standards, regulations, certification processes and labeling for organic products. In Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency oversees the labeling of organic products within the framework of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations, which is the regulatory program for organic production. The Canadian Organic Regime governs the organic certification process, and organic production standards are incorporated within the context of the Canadian General Standards Board. In both the US and Canada, organic labeling is determined based on the percentage of organic content in the products.
