Parsing Fluted Point Technological Variability in the South-Central Ice-Free Corridor

Abstract
Southern portions of the Ice-Free Corridor likely became habitable not long after 14,000 cal yr BP, available to both stemmed and fluted projectile point makers. There has been little exploration of the technological pathways through which Corridor fluted points were manufactured and maintained, nor has much thought been devoted to fluted point findspots and their implications for discarded fluted point forms. Recent findings from the Brazeau Reservoir in west central Alberta encouraged more detailed investigation of both factors. End-struck, early stage bifacial preforms and fluted late stage bifacial preforms were employed in some Corridor instances. Fluted point life histories have a determinative affect upon tool form but often leave basal morphologies isomorphic with classic Clovis forms such as those from the Naco mammoth kill. Parsing of these technological processes will help chart northward movement of the fluting concept in the Corridor toward its final, Younger Dryas expression in eastern Beringia.
