Canada’s Ontological Transition? Learning from Indigenous-Led Interactions with Truth and Reconciliation

Abstract
This exploratory case study presents ‘ontological agility’ as crucial for settler Canadians to understand and appropriately redress historical and contemporary Indigenous-specific atrocity violence. Using thematic analysis of public-facing Indigenous-led interactions with ‘truth and reconciliation’, findings show that Indigenous activists implicitly and explicitly reinforce skills that can foster ontological agility in settler Canadians. This dynamic plays out in how Indigenous activists approach diverse views and contestation in discourse about truth and reconciliation and other forms of redress. Consequently, there is value in settler Canadians leaning into focal interactions as sites for learning how to become ontologically agile in transforming Indigenous-settler relations.
