In a holistic form, the article presents the periodization of the process of substantiation of approaches based on traditional values to the spiritual and moral education of schoolchildren by Russian pedagogical thinkers of the second half of the XVIII - first quarter of the XXI century. A retrospective of the formation and development of traditional spiritual and moral values in Russian education is characterized. The value foundations of the functioning of the system of spiritual and moral education of students in secondary schools have been established. The features of the implementation of the national state policy in the field of education and socialization of children and youth in modern conditions are determined.
