Abstract

Abstract The paper describes the physics behind the change that has taken place recently of the nature of the International System of Units, commonly called SI. This change took place in 2019 in the definition of the units forming the basis of the System: those base units, some of them defined originally by means of laws and artefacts, are now all defined in terms of physical constants. An important aspect of this fundamental change is the role played by the base unit, the second, associated with frequency and time measurements. Its definition in terms of the ground state hyperfine frequency of the 133Cs atom plays now a central role entering into the definition of all base units, except the mol. The paper shows how this is done and consequently shows the importance of the developments of atomic frequency standards for obtaining the greatest precision and accuracy in the field of metrology.
