Abstract
Abstract This chapter examines Canadian foreign policy under the unconventional leadership of Progressive Conservative Prime Minister John Diefenbaker from 1957 to 1963. It includes the prime minister’s 1958 world tour, a failed effort to divert trade from the United States to Great Britain, disagreements within the Commonwealth over trade and human rights, peacekeeping in the Congo, closer military integration with the United States to support the defence of North America, and changes to Canada’s immigration policy. The cases include the establishment of the North American Air Defence Command, Canada’s response to South African Apartheid, and the national debate over nuclear weapons. The Beyond the Book case examines Canada–US relations during the Cuban Missile Crisis. The political challenges facing the inexperienced and insecure Diefenbaker government are emphasized throughout.
