Abstract
Abstract This chapter goes beyond the well-rehearsed scholarship concerning atrocities in the wake of the battle. It identifies the global implications of the Forty-Five, noting that men from 18 regiments which had fought one another at Fontenoy were on the field at Culloden, and placing both the Rising and its imperial legacy in the shape of the Acadian deportations in the context of the imperial struggle over Canada. The Army’s desire to implement a Cromwellian “Irish” policy of population transplantation and summary execution was nullified by British political pressure, but the military struggle to control the institutions of Scottish governance and society throughout the whole of the country continued deep into the 1750s, until population transplantation in Canada was accompanied by extensive Scottish recruitment to fight the French there.
